While presenting stress management to an audience, a psychologist moved around the room. Everyone anticipated being asked the "half empty, half full" question as she raised a glass of water. Instead, she said, "How heavy is this glass of water?" with a smile on her face.

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She responded by saying, "It makes no difference how heavy anything is in absolute terms. It depends on how long I keep it in my hand. It's not an issue if I hold it for a minute. I'll have an ache in my arm if I hold it for an hour. My arm will go numb and paralyzed if I hold it for a day. The weight of the glass is same in each case, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

She went on to say, "Life's anxieties and concerns are like a glass of water. Nothing occurs if you think about them for a time. When you think about them for a while, they start to ache. And if you worry about them all day, you'll become immobilized and unable to accomplish anything."
